Chris Andrews booked his first bet as a fifth grader.  Kids would scrape together their milk money to play the parlay cards Andrews and his two cousins printed each week by hand.  Through high school Andrews and his cohorts continued booking bets and operating card games.  Andrews paid his own way through college, hustling bets and making book to fund his education.

After graduating cum laude from Robert Morris College, Andrews came west to Las Vegas.  The next two years were spent at two of Las Vegas’ legendary sportsbooks, the Stardust and Barbary Coast, where he learned the old Nevada method of being a bookmaker.  He took the knowledge from that experience and at twenty five was hired by Club Cal Neva.  He turned the tiny Reno sportsbook into one of the biggest and most successful sportsbooks in Nevada.  In 1991 he became a partner in the Cal Neva, but left in 2003 when his cousin bought the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas.  A short time later, the Golden Nugget was sold and Andrews went to work for American Wagering.

Later Andrews spent two years as a wealth manager, but his heart was still in the gaming industry.  Cal Neva had been bought by William Hill and his old partners asked him to come aboard and help them through the transition.  Once the sale was completed, Andrews explored various possibilities and realized his experience as a bookmaker, radio host and writer could be used to turn the tables on bookmakers and help the wagering public.  He and his partners formed Against The Number to do just that.

John Matthew was born and raised in the shadows of the legendary Belmont Park. It was there, at a very young age, that he was exposed to both the discipline of handicapping, and the hardships of gambling. As an athlete and spirited sports fan, his love for horse racing would inevitably evolve into a passion for sports betting. But like so many others who have taken up such an endeavor, he was unable to achieve success. Simply watching games, paying attention to media reports and studying various websites produced seemingly no better results than the flip of a coin or a blind guess. With a dwindling bank account and few failed memberships to some 900 number touting services, this self-proclaimed "Dead Square" finally decided that it was either time for a change, or time to quit.

A software engineer by trade, John began developing small programs to provide him with some statistical analysis in the hopes that this could increase his chances of winning. With years of study, countless hours of research and many mistakes, these programs grew into a fully automated application that greatly increased both the efficiency at which John could examine the sports market, and subsequently the size of that once diminishing bank account. A "Square" no more, John was armed with knowledge, and armed with a powerful forecasting tool. This tool he aptly named "SHARPS".

Over the past few years, with much insightful input from key members of the Against the Number community, SHARPS has become a commercially ready, full featured handicapping console. John hopes that it can continue to grow and improve just as he did and that by using it, you can too.

John Matthew lives in Nevada and is married to the love of his life. He has 3 dogs, and in his spare time, enjoys golf and song writing.

I have been betting and capping sports for well over a decade now and believe that two things are paramount to success....time investment, and bankroll management.  Because of this I spend hours pouring over numbers, data, trends and betting history to make sure every angle has been exhausted.

When it comes time to place a bet I don't believe in the marketing of Games of the Year, Month, Week etc, but rather maintain a consistent approach to my wagers.

Sports betting is an investment to me and making sure that I have a 360 degree view and understanding of the market allows me to invest wisely and with confidence.

Dr Matt

I am an Australian Sports bettor with a maths/science background and an economics degree. My sports handicapping combines in depth statistical analysis with an astute analysis of betting markets. I have a keen eye for bias, faults and misconceptions within markets – this has allowed me to capitalize and be a successful sports bettor.

I love data and statistics. I use databases that I have generally designed myself and I only handicap sports where I believe that I have an edge. I understand markets and pricing. The mathematics of betting is an integral part of the process for me.

I see the same mistakes being made by bettors again and again. Mistakes that can be avoided. Picking a winner is just one part of the sports betting equation. Long term the statistics say that most will inevitably fail. Most sports bettors are not educated about what they are doing. They do not truly understand the markets that they bet into and the forces that drive those market prices.  I would implore anyone to stop gambling and start investing – the first step is to get educated. Extracting value in every bet you place is the key to maximizing winnings and minimizing losses. Value is king.

I am an Australian sports bettor with a background in Actuarial Studies and therefore a penchant for all things statistical, as well as the co-author of The Punters Guide to the 2013 AFL Season (the first sports betting-based book of its kind with respect to the AFL, and the “sister publication” to Nick Tedeschi’s The Punters Guide to the 2013 NRL Season).

An avid sports fan (across the vast majority of major sports played in Australia) all of my life, I have only quite recently turned his statistical focus to the sports wagering sector – in particular, to the Australian Football League (AFL), National Rugby League (NRL) and horse racing.

With in-depth statistical analysis of sports betting markets being so rarely undertaken in the Australian context, I can often find biased and/ or inefficiently priced markets to establish where the value exists and just as importantly, where it doesn’t exist.

Brian Edwards covers football, basketball, baseball and the UFC with a special emphasis on SEC football and SEC hoops. He has handicapped for VI since 2002.

Brian is a 1998 graduate of the University of Florida. After working as a sports writer in the Atlanta area for nearly two years, Edwards joined Vegas Insider in March of 2000.

Brian is a regular guest on radio shows all across the country. During football season, he is a weekly guest on the The Paul Howard Show in Las Vegas, The Drive with Nick Bahe on 93.7 The Ticket in Lincoln, Nebraska and the Chris Vernon Show in Memphis. Brian also makes regular appearances on Chad Millman's podcast on ESPN.com.

On Dec. 26 of 2009, Brian beat every member of the national media to the news of Urban Meyer's resignation as the head football coach at the University of Florida. Of course, Meyer changed his mind the next day, but VI was the website that provided that stunning news first. Also, Brian alerted bettors to the pending suspensions of 20 FSU football players prior to the Music City Bowl in '07, suggesting that gamblers immediately play Kentucky -1 because the line was going to be heavily adjusted. As it turned out, Brian advised VI readers to then come back with FSU +9 (the adjusted number) so when the 'Cats won by seven, the perfect 'middle' gave gamblers multiple winners.

Brian hosted VI's radio show, The Power Hours, on Thursday nights from 2005-2012.

Brian is a life-long fan of the Florida Gators, Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Hawks and the Atlanta Falcons.

Brian is also a big fan of Steve Spurrier, Charles Barkley, the Van Gundys, Bill Raftery, Hannah Storm and Erin Andrews. On the flip side, Brian is not a big fan of Roger Clemens, Alex Rodriguez, Kobe Bryant, Bobby Bowden and all Dookies including Coach K.

Marc grew up on the mean streets of the South Bronx. He's the rare combination of Yankees and Jets fan which explains his often contrarian point of view. He learned about gambling at a young age working down the street from a bookie who took action on anything from the mainstream sports to the last three digits of the purse for certain horse races. Yeah, that's a thing.

When Marc turned 21 he learned about the legal side of gambling in Atlantic City. The first $5 wagered in a casino was a spin on the the Big 6 Wheel, which is one of the worst bets in the casino. Ironically, that $5 bet won $225 on the 45-1 shot. That was easy!

Since that first trip to Atlantic City the Big 6 wheel hasn't been played again but there have been plenty of dice rolled, cards dealt and slot machines played. Life in casinos is a constant lesson to find the right mix of smart gambling and a good time.

As life went on interest in the casino business grew and Marc started a casino and gaming blog. There were no grand designs on the blog as it was created so he could learn how to use wordpress for work. In 2012 Marc left the east coast and moved to Las Vegas, a place he'd visited countless times and had everything he wanted.

Today Marc writes about everything a guy could want to do for work and play in Las Vegas for Gaming Today, Travel Vegas, Vegas Chatter and his blog which is now called AC2LV. Being a freelance writer and social media consultant allows Marc to work anywhere there's a wifi signal. This allows him to work from the sportsbook at Red Rock Resort or the food court at The Venetian where you’ll find fast and free wifi.

Writing about steak, drinking and gambling is a tough job but somebody has to do it.

Tweet Marc @eastcoastgamblr where you can find all of his articles about gaming and Las Vegas along with lots pictures of food and gambling.
