Second Test Match in Adelaide ,South Australia
Starts Wednesday 15th Dec 20.00 pm
Australia v England
Market : to win the test match
Selection : Australia -188
One of the longest rivalries in world sport resumed last week when The Ashes test match cricket series started in Brisbane Queensland. Australia emphatically defeated England well inside four days to take a 1-0 lead in the five match series
Ashes cricket has been played since 1882 both alternately in England & Australia
With the current series in Australia the visitors have a terrible recent record down under. England have not won a single test match since 2011 and now find themselves under huge pressure to recover in the second match of the series
Although England will bring back veteran world class bowlers into the side in Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad at 39 & 35 years of age respectively the task to outscore Australia in two innings is a daunting one. The pair of test match legends have 1156 career test wickets between them but the majority of that success has been stacked up on home soil, both are far less effective overseas.
In the first test match England’s batting was woeful as they were bowled out cheaply in the first innings for 147 and gave a 278 deficit going into the second innings
Englands entire test batting in 2021 has relied heavily on Joe Root he has scored no fewer than 1100 runs more than the next best player including six centuries but that highlights how poor the rest are with no other England current batsman having a test match batting average over 40.
The Day Night test in Adelaide should be bowler friendly especially when the floodlights take effect in the twilight sessions which effectively takes the likelihood of the game being a draw out of the equation
Anderson and Broads inclusion will mean England will probably drop spinner Jack Leach and all rounder Chris Woakes to pitch up with a five men all seam attack.
Pat Cummins first test match as captain of Australia could not have gone any better as he set a strong performance with the ball in victory
Travis Head who was a borderline selection scored a superb 150 in the first innings in Brisbane and makes the Australian batting look more superior with Smith , Warner and Labuschagne being their main source of runs over the last two years
World class spinner Nathan Lyon finally got his 400th test wicket in Brisbane and will be brimming with confidence after his four wickets in the second innings
The find for Australia over the last few years is all rounder Cameron Green from Western Australia he was predominately a batsman who bowls a bit but has now established himself as a quality seam swing bowler.
This will allow Australia to balance their side perfectly in years to come especially when Australia play in the sub continent with possibly two spinners
In this Adelaide test the Aussies have lost opening bowler Josh Hazlewood to injury but Jhye Richardson will slot in as a replacement.
Richardson has been the stand out bowler in domestic Shield cricket this Australian summer. Add the fact that left armer Mitch Starc has a great record in Adelaide the Australian bowling attack will be far from being compromised in any way.
Cummins will open the bowling with Starc with Richardson & Green as third and fourth seamers with Lyon as the spin option.
The only small chinks in the Australian armour might be the opening batsman Marcus Harris has lacked a big test score while David Warner faces a fitness test after severe rib bruising from a few short balls from Ben Stokes But left handed batter Usman Khawaja who has scored plenty of Shield runs recently will slide in if Warner fails to make it . Khawaja was unlucky not to make the first test team in front of Head in any case .
Difficult to see England upsetting the odds in a test match they desperately need to win to draw parity in the series
Australia at – 188 the obvious play.
